How many menstrual products does a woman need in her life?
Sustainable menstruation with period underwear
Our Taynie period briefs are designed to replace up to 7 regular tampons, depending on the model. If well cared for, Taynies will easily last for four years. We recommend using an average of five Taynies during one period. With an average of 456 period cycles that a woman goes through in her life, she only needs about 48 Taynie period briefs on average. That sounds much better than 15,000 tampons or pads.
Less waste is the goal
Tampons and sanitary pads do not last long. They must be disposed of after one use. Often, they are disposed of incorrectly and flushed down the toilet out of shame or because there is no waste bin. Unfortunately, this type of disposal can not only lead to blockages in sewage pipes, but also contribute to the contamination of our water. It is true that used tampons and sanitary pads belong in the general waste, as they are not recyclable or biodegradable.
Final boss packaging waste
The packaging waste from tampons and sanitary pads also leaves its mark. For hygiene reasons, most tampons are packaged in plastic, which ends up in the world's rivers and seas at the end of their journey, causing significant damage to the environment. Even though packaging waste cannot be completely avoided, Taynie is particularly keen to use packaging waste for period underwear made from recycled cardboard and packaging material (FSC standard) and thus declare war on plastic.
Avoidance of biocides that are harmful to health and the environment
Many textile suppliers advertise the use of biocides and their antibacterial effect, which is supposed to prevent odors. This may sound good as an advertising message, but numerous studies and the latest findings now prove their negative effects on people and the environment. These include, for example, the washing out of biocides in the washing machine, the development of resistance, allergies and damage to skin health. According to a Case study by the Federal Environment Agency Biocides are largely washed out after the first few washes, end up in our water and pollute the environment. That's why we don't use biocides. Our Taynie period underwear is machine washable at up to 60 degrees and is therefore sustainably hygienic.
